Harvest is set to get underway soon, and after a rejuvenating festive break our vineyard and cellar teams are raring to go here at Muratie Wine Estate. Winemaker Hattingh expects a fine crop after optimal budding, flowering and fruit set. He is particularly excited about the quality of the later-ripening red varieties, and singles out Cabernet Sauvignon as a wine to watch from the 2024 vintage.
The South African wine industry is one of the few that can trace its inception to an exact date, thanks to the diary of Jan van Riebeeck. The first governor of the Cape wrote on 2 February 1659: “Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes.” Every year, close to this date, the Stellenbosch wine community celebrates the birthday of our industry while also giving thanks for the new season.
