As we wrap up the year and get ready to celebrate the festive season, we would like to thank you for being part of the Simonsig family – and for allowing us to be part of your special moments and celebrations!
As this final chapter unfolds, join us in revisiting the 10 game-changers that shaped our 2023 - a year marked by a new generation taking the reins, thrilling wine releases, and exciting happenings throughout the farm.
1. Milestone year
With our first wine Simonsig Steen being released in 1968, 2023 marked our 55th vintage – a big year for us and a cultivar that is truly part of our DNA.
2. A new era begins
Third-generation Michael Malan took over the reins as cellarmaster overseeing his first harvest at the helm of Simonsig, walking in the footsteps of his father, Johan, and grandfather and founder, Frans Malan.
3. Breaking records
The 2023 harvest was the earliest harvest in living memory of the Malan family and was also the largest Cap Classique harvest to-date.
4. Old vines tell stories
The beloved Chenin Avec Chêne got a new look and identity with the release of Langbult Steen, our first old vine wine made from a single vineyard of Chenin Blanc planted in 1987. Three generations of the Malan family have now tended to this vineyard site.
5. New look, same great wine
Our Cultivar Collection got a refresh with a few new names in the mix. The range now consists of Jamala Gewürztraminer, Sunbird Sauvignon Blanc, Cape Fox Chardonnay, Pick of the Bunch Pinotage, Mr Borio’s Shiraz and Needless to Say Rosé.
6. Painting the town pink
We launched our Needless to Say Rosé, the first still rosé to join our local portfolio. It glamorously made its debut at the South African premiere of Barbie the movie together with Satin Nectar Rosé, and this trailer played before it aired.
7. A new jewel joins the crown
The exclusive Satin Royale joined the Kaapse Vonkel range, meaning we now have 6 different expressions of Cap Classique for your enjoyment. Adorned in regal colours of royal blue and gold, Satin Royale is the very essence of celebration, vivacity, and luxury.
8. Seeing (green and) gold
Not only did the Bokke win their 4th World Cup title, but we raked up 9 double gold awards, 18 gold medals and 22 90+ ratings. Redhill Pinotage was also selected as one of Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 wines of the year.
9. Good wines start in the vineyards
This year our team was very busy planting cultivars for our award-winning Cap Classique, including Pinot Meunier, Pinotage and Pinot Noir on one of the highest sites on our farm, ensuring we continue bringing you quality wines to enjoy.
10. Vintage treasures and a bubbly day of 'Life in Colour'
From our exclusive Vintage Day, revealing rare gems, to the dazzling Cap Classique Affair with 20 top producers from throughout the country, we've shared the joy of wine with our Simonsig family and can’t wait to celebrate with you again in 2024!
A very merry Christmas and happy new year from the Malan family and Simonsig team!
