The Survivor Pinotage Reserve 2020 rose to the occasion, obtaining its first coveted 5* rating in the Platter's by Diners Club South Africa Wine guide 2023. The recipients of its esteemed awards were announced last week, featured in the 43rd edition of this collectable hardback guide, this year dressed in white.
Featuring more than 8 000 locally produced wines, the Survivor Pinotage Reserve 2020 shares the Pinotage five-star podium with iconic heavyweights such at the Kanonkop Black Label 2020 and Kaapzicht Steytler Pinotage 2020, earmarking 2020 as an exceptional vintage for Pinotage. It also arms SURVIVOR's pursuit of excellence in showcasing terroir. Wines receiving the sought-after 5* rating in Platter's must undergo a rigorous process of sighted and blind assessments by a team of experienced experts, attesting to the outstanding quality of a 4.5* achievement. As a result, all 5* achievers received at least 95, and 4.5* wines only narrowly missed 5*, earning 94 on the 100-point scale.

Chenin Blanc dominates the white wine category, galvanising South Africa's astounding success in anchoring this cultivar as a flagbearer for some of South Africa's top white wines. After handing the SURVIVOR baton to Pierre Wahl as the new Cellar Master for SURVIVOR wines, Ben Snyman, who made these winning wines, is thrilled that he could set the pace.
"All of the wines in the SURVIVOR stable have been consistent performers. With Wahl's maiden vintage of the Survivor Cellar Master Pendulum receiving 4.5* stars, I can only imagine where he aims to take this brand," says Snyman.
