At Michelangelo International Wine and Spirit Awards's prestigious, black-tie event for 400 guests, hosted by Southern Sun Hotel Group in the Cape Sun, 20 trophies were handed out, together with three special Grand Prix awards which were given to deserving winners.
Top awards
The Multi Color Corporation Grand Prix trophy for the single Highest Scoring entry, went to Kleinhoekkloof Wines for their outstanding 2018 Jupiter. This entry scored highest out of 1650 entries received in this year’s competition.
The second Multi Color Corporation Grand Prix trophy, which is awarded annually to the highest scoring dessert wine, went to Klein Welmoed Wine and Olive Estate for their 2016 Straw Wine.
Lastly, the Grand Prix trophy, for the Highest Scoring Spirits, went to Joseph Barry Distillers for their sublime Joseph Barry XO.
In this year’s competition, out of 1,650 entries from 9 different countries, a total of 675 awards were bestowed, consisting of 23 trophies, 19 Platinum, 194 Double Gold, 380 Gold and 58 Silver medals.
“For an entry to receive a Platinum medal, it has to achieve at least 96 points, while a Double Gold medal requires 93 points, a Gold medal 89 points and a Silver 86. These are exceptionally high standards to strive for, but exactly the reason why a Michelangelo medal is considered an outstanding achievement by consumers and connoisseurs alike. Annually, only approximately one third of all entries are awarded, making a Michelangelo award one of the most valued awards in the industry.” Says Dr. Winnie Bowman – technical director of the Michelangelo Awards.
In support of this award of excellence, several world-leader multi-national companies, have entered into, and renewed their association with Michelangelo as Trophy Sponsors.
Michelangelo is exceptionally honoured to have their brand – and the brands of the winning producers associated with the largest hotel group in Africa – The Southern Sun Group; Africa’s favourite airline - FlySafair, one of the largest label printing solutions companies Globally – MCC Labels; the world leaders in jet finance and leasing – JETCRAFT; the leading Business Class Lounge business in Africa – Bidvest Premium Lounges; the largest logistics company globally – Vinlog, powered by Keuhne&Nagel, and the pace setting cellar supplies company – African Cellar Supplies.
The objective of these partnerships is mutual brand and sales promotions, leveraging off each other’s international market reach and presence. By combining forces between the wine and spirits’ industries, and that of leading aviation, logistics, printing solutions, cellar supplies, hospitality and tourism companies, an exponential world-wide effect is achieved in complimentary industries to mutual benefit.
