Wine Searcher, Laura McKenna
To be a producer of premium and expensive South African wines is not for the faint of heart. The pandemic hit the wine industry of the Cape particularly hard with intermittent bans on alcoholic beverage sales. Add the worldwide shipping delays when everything from cork to oak is imported into the country – often in Euro currency, to add another element of financial challenge. Finally, political instabilities and relentless, crippling droughts and phew! Fine wine production requires the courage of a lion.
But that doesn't mean it can't be done. The average critic score for the 10 most expensive wines from South Africa is 93 points. In a comparison with other Southern Hemisphere counterparts of Australia, New Zealand, Chile and Argentina, there is clearly no compromise in quality of the 10 most expensive wines, with an average of 94, 91, 93 and 94 points respectively.
As well as quality, looking at the list below, there is plenty of pigment and tannin as well; its all Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and red blends...
Let's take a look at what made the cut.
