19th May 2003 - Sunday saw the first day of the 2003 Winelands Boule League getting started – albeit a little late. The light-hearted nature of the day, the usual sledging and the indulgence of some cheeky little numbers set the tone for a great Autumn days play. The emphasis of the league is just to have fun and not to discourage this with the inevitable tenseness that some games may generate. What was great to see was the Topaz development team get off to a cracking start with 2 wins out of 3! Domaine Clivet kicked off much the way they ended last year with 3 good wins! The Noble Rotters (missing 2 of their regulars) started shakily with 2 losses with low scores followed by a good win at the end – it must have been the good wine starting to course through the veins that did it… The Lasses had a bumpy first outing with 3 losses. The red tops will, no doubt, put in a late run I’m sure.Wine.co.za has kindly offered to sponsor new tent pegs with their flag attached to be used in marking out the corners of the courts – thanks Judy.At the end of the day there was a request from two new players wishing to enter their own teams, which will bring our number up to 13 teams. We are still wanting to get another three to make it 16 in all. In this way every team plays each other once and has one bye before the finals. The following Players we have not heard from and would love them to enter a team. Please can you let me know if you will be entering a team this year: Pat Roach – ForrestersPieter Ferreira – Graham BeckChris Kelly – Stellenbosch VineyardsJulian Brewer – VillieraIf you know of anyone else whom you think might want to send a team please forward them the emails. We’d love to hear from them.Next game:Game 2 on 8th June at Helderberg Co-op Cellar at 10h30 - Request & Permission pending. You will be advised if the venue is to change. Please email me for the Score Card to check your results.Lastly, to those who have not paid the League Fees please do so either before the next game by contacting Clive Torr at ctorr@cwa.org.za to get the bank account details or bring the money to the next game – the Fee is R150 per person for the whole tournament (that’s only R25 per day – the price of an average bottle of wine!)
