Neethlingshof
This month, Neethlingshof Wine Estate in Stellenbosch is celebrating Malbec, Easter, the end of harvest, and more.

Celebrating all things Malbec

Although Malbec originates from France, where it grows in the Sud-Ouest, Argentina is now home to nearly 75% of the Malbec vineyards, worldwide. The country is actually known as the “saviour” of Malbec.

The variety has traveled the world and one can now find successful plantings in Australia, Chile, and South Africa.

Malbec is a thin-skinned grape that is rather tough. Therefore the vines require hotter weather for optimal ripening. The variety is known for its plump, dark fruit flavours and smokey finish. The grape gives way to full-bodied wines with medium acidity and a medium tannin structure.

Malbec has been cultivated in Stellenbosch and Paarl since the 1920s with the first South African Malbec bottled as a single varietal in the early 1990s.

Here are a few words from our cellarmaster De Wet Viljoen on the journey of our Neethlingshof Malbec

“The vineyard was planted in 2003. The first wine was produced on 8 March 2006 (the day of my eldest birth). This wine was not bottled, as was the case with the 2007 vintage. The reason was that the vineyard was still young and we felt that the fruit needed more concentration. The first bottling happened in 2008. This wine was entered into the International Malbec Challenge, held in Cahor, France, and won a silver medal – still very proud of this!  Our Malbec is leaning towards the Argentinian style – more upfront fruit with good depth and balance. The wine is very true to the terroir where it is grown.”

On 17 April, every year since 2011, we celebrate World Malbec Day, a global initiative created by Wine of Argentina. We now invite you to do the same!

If you have not yet tried our special Malbec be sure to get yourself a few bottles to celebrate this incredibly popular cultivar!
