La Motte Wine Estate cellarmaster Edmund Terblanche has access to grapes, not only from the Estate but from other wine appellations.

The La Motte Vin de Joie is a blend of three different wine grapes, from three different appellations, 71% Grenache from Riebeek Kasteel and Piekenierskloof, 19% Mourvèdre from Franschhoek and the Syrah is sourced in the Walker Bay Wine Appellation on the Cape South Coast, near Hermanus.

The vineyard blocks are at different levels about the sea and are grown in different soils. The Grenache in shale and decomposed sandstone, Mourvèdre in sandy soils and the Syrah in hard gravely shale. Some of the vineyards are trellised and others are bush vines.

Chilled in a cold room overnight to prevent too much colour leeching into the juice. Destemmed and crushed the grape go straight into press where 600 litres of juice which ran off was used for the wine. After fermentation in Stainless teel Tanks, the wine is prepared for bottling.

Pour

From a clear tear drop shaped bottle. Closed with a blue screw cap – nice colour contrast with the wine. The label is elegant and fun while at the same time serious. In the glass the wine is what the Californians call Partridge Eye, a pale coral pink with a touch of onion skin. The aromas, which segue into the palate, are of ripe winter melon, fresh sliced white nectarine with a charming undertow of roses. From entry the palate is clean, sappy, and zingy fresh. The slowly waning aftertaste repeats the stone fruit. A perfect glass for Spring and Summer enjoyment.

Pair

As I said, the La Motte Vin de Joie 2021 is the perfect Summer sipper. It is also made for food. In summer, a lovely fresh salad, perhaps served with prosciutto, strips of Franschhoek Cold Smoked Trout would make a lovely partner. Sophia Lindop’s Seared Duck Breast Salad is the answer.
