Jean Vincent Ridon and Gerda Louw have been awarded the highest distinction the OIV can grant a book.

The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) is an intergovernmental organisation that deals with technical and scientific aspects of viticulture and winemaking. The field of OIV includes grape production, wine, but also table grapes and raisin production.

This international Award is a distinction granted each year by an international Jury composed of eminent personalities in the vitivinicultural world who represent the OIV Member Countries.

Jean-Vincent Ridon's "Passion for Pairing" is a photographic book covering the diversity of South African cuisine infused with the excitement of pairing it with local wines, beers and brandies. It already made the headlines earlier this year for receiving the Best in the World Gourmand Award.

"The Gourmand Award already made my year since it is an international book award aimed at the general public with a love for food and wine. Receiving the 2021 OIV prize awarded by a much more technical jury is a true endorsement from my peers. I can't describe how proud it makes me feel", declares Ridon.

The 248-page large-format book tries to cover the diversity of South African cuisine, from Soweto to the Bo-Kaap, including 16 of our best local chefs. It guides the reader through a sensual journey of pairing these dishes with the most appropriate wines, while telling the stories behind the story.

Besides the 2021 OIV Award presented to the book, Gerda Louw receives an OIV Commendation for the quality of her photographs in Passion for Pairing.

Available at many wineries around the Cape, Passion for Pairing can be ordered online on shop.winery.co.za

The Award Ceremony will be held in Bordeaux on 17 December 2021.
