Michiel du Toit, the Landskroon Wine Maker, allows fermentation of juice and skins together in tanks and matures the wine using French oak staves. The wine is then prepared for bottling. This is a ‘drink-me-now’ wine, though a year of cool cellaring will reward you. It took three stars in the 2020 Platter’s Guide to South African Wines.
Pour
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label, which will be changed shortly, is an elegant simple one. In the glass, the wine is a deep plumb which pales to ruby at the edges. The aromas are of berries picked off hedgerows, like brambles and mulberries, rustic stuff. The palate is generous, medium bodied, with the Shiraz adding some gravitas. Fine acidity from entry to the refreshing aftertaste.
Pair
The Landskroon Cinsaut Shiraz 2017 like to be chilled for about 30 minutes in an ice bucket. Perfect with a smoked chicken or mackerel salad in the style of a Caesar Salad. Good with a sausage off the braai. Anina Meyer’s Smokey Mexican Bean Salad is a perfect lunch time partner, with a crisp crunchy baguette. Click here for her recipe.
