The competition crowns the finest wines brought forth by different soil and climatic factors in the different areas in the South African winelands. Only products certified as Wine of Origin (WO) from a Single Vineyard, Estate, Ward or District not comprising more than one ward, can be entered.
Because all the wines participating have to adhere to the rule of a specific soil and climate terroir, the vintage can play a crucial part. Terroir that had a very good vintage for specific cultivars will surely stand out.
Exciting news for winemakers and viticulturists is that a new trophy and two new categories have been added to the competition from this year.
A new trophy for the Top Wine overall will be introduced this year. The new categories are Best Certified Heritage Vineyard Wine and Best Straw Wine.
Entries close on 11 June 2019, and the judging takes place on 2 – 5 July. The volume requirement for entries is 240 bottles (180 litres). The awards luncheon will be held on Thursday 1 August.

Novare, the title sponsor of the SA Terroir Wine Competition from the onset, has announced that it would continue its support for the competition, now under the auspices of the SA National Wine Show Association (SANWSA).

Christo Pienaar, chairman of the South African National Wine Show Association (SANWSA), says that an agreement was reached last year with the founder of the SA Terroir Wine Awards in 2006, Marius Labuschagne, to take ownership of the competition and present it in future. “We are excited to be able to take such a specialised wine competition on board and to take it to the next level of distinction. We will work closely with Novare to develop the competition with greater added value for all concerned.”
