Quoin Rock
Quoin Rock came storming out of the starting gate like horses starting the Durban July with some truly great wines and a fabulous restaurant, Gåte on the Estate, about which I continue to hear amazing things. Rikku Ò’Donnchü is making his mark in the culinary affairs of the winelands

Definitely on my bucket list for my next visit to the Cape. The estate finds itself situated on the slopes of the iconic Simonsberg. I first fell in love with a Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Blend on one of my many trips to the Australian Winelands, particularly Margaret River in Western Australia. It has become a firm favourite and the Quoin Rock Namysto has firmly taken its place amongst my most enjoyed. I love the way the Semillon adds gravitas to the Sauvignon Blanc, a somewhat Puckish like the character in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Having spent time in French oak barrels, this wine is one of fine character. Made in the absence of oxygen to preserve the fabulous fruit profiles of the both varieties, some fermentation taking place in stainless steel tanks, the other in French oak barrels with regular lees stirring to build up the mid palate and to give the wine a creaminess. 6 months of further oak maturation completes the processes before the wines are prepared for bottling.

Pour
From a Bordeaux shaped bottle, closed with natural cork. The label is amusing and elegant with strings of beads [Namysto] which are classical Ukraine, and indeed African decorations. In the glass the wine is a pale golden straw. The aromas are rich with tropical fruits, figs, crushed fig leaves, and sweet tropical limes. The oak and its concomitant spice is in undertow as is the lanolin quality of the Semillon giving the wine its beauty palate weight. Here you will find melon and the rough-skinned lemons which grow in groves on most wine farms.

Pair
Which this is a gentle sipper, perhaps at sundown, it is a perfect food wine. Dianne Bibby’s Rosemary and Paprika Roast Chicken is a magical partner to the Quoin Rock Namysto Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2017. Click Here for her recipe.
