The estate’s dates back to 1693 and the wines produced here are inspired by the harmony of a rich history, the fertile soil and lush vineyards. Plaisir de Merle is one of the Cape’s largest and oldest wine farms and about half of the estate is under vineyards whilst the rest is largely left untouched, preserving the indigenous biomes of plant and animal life. The vineyards are located between 180m and 500m above sea level where the high east-facing slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain shade the vines from the warm, late afternoon sun, slowing down the ripening for concentrated aromas and complex structure.
