Corli Els makes her mark on her newest venture
At Hazendal’s Hermitage Restaurant, new chef, award-winning Corli Els of Fusion Café fame, makes her mark on her newest venture with a summer menu that showcases the freshest Cape fare, as well as some traditional Russian delicacies.
Hazendal’s famous summer picnics will once again be served in the picturesque setting alongside the dam and the historic manor house.
Before or after, visitors will find the Marvol Museum of Russian Art and Culture a perfect place to experience the new cosmopolitan synergy of the Cape Winelands. For the coming season the Russian curators, Alexander and Natalia Kononov, have arranged a new exhibition and also invite guests to enjoy traditional samovar tea, a colourful and decorative tea party with Russian pastry delicacies.
The chic gallery inside the wine cellar features a rare exhibition of Russian realist paintings, religious icons and Fabergé eggs, including one of only 10 in the world, decorated in the colours of the South African flag, that matches the egg that Dr Voloshin presented to ex president Nelson Mandela. The museum offers guided tours with talks and videos on Russian art, ballet and culture.
Those with a passion for jewellery, crystal, porcelain and eye frames will find Hazendal’s Fabergé Shoppe a feast for the eyes and maybe a temptation for the wallet. Carl Fabergé is synonymous with the magnificent Imperial Easter Eggs made for the Russian Tsars and exquisite ornaments favoured by Europe’s grandest families. His legacy lives on in the contemporary objets d’art now created by Fabergé Workmaster Victor Mayer of Germany. Mayer’s brilliant original designs can be viewed and purchased at Hazendal.
Hazendal offers a magnificent venue for weddings, private functions and conferences with its special ambience, excellent service and attention to detail, and in addition hosts several special functions that are open to the public. These include the Russian New Year, annual Jazz Concert and various musical and celebrity evenings. In conjunction with Creative Corporate Hospitality the estate offers 4x4 driver training, quad bike events, archery and clay pigeon shoots.
