South African makers, tasters and growers of Shiraz will be able to benefit from the vast experience of internationally renowned guru on olfaction, Alexandre Schmitt, during the next SA Shiraz workshop to be held on 14 November at Kronenburg, Paarl.

SA Shiraz was established in 2008 to serve this niche of the wine industry and for their 10th technical workshop they have succeeded in obtaining the services of Schmitt who consults for some of the largest and most prominent wine producers globally. It will be the first time that South Africans can benefit from his expertise.

Schmitt has been training winemakers on olfactory perception for 15 years through his business Wine & Flavors. After working in the perfume industry in Paris he returned to Bordeaux and was coaxed into applying his particular skills in the wine industry.

The rest of the jam-packed programme includes a myriad of invaluable discussions centring on this noble cultivar: Dr José-Luis Aleixandre Tudo will address the issue of predicting a red wine’s ageability, while a panel discussion and tasting of wines from the 1980’s and 1990’s will serve to determine whether Shiraz matures well. Attendees will have the chance to taste and discuss the sensory analysis of the twelve winning wines of the 2017 Shiraz SA Challenge.

In addition attendees will be able to taste, under guidance of Dr Andy Roediger, gold medallist wines from Syrah du Monde 2017.

Shiraz SA thanks its sponsor, Vinventions, for enabling the industry to take leaps into the future of winemaking.
