Nederburg cellar-master Andrea Freeborough, says this off-dry, unwooded wine with an enticing floral aroma is one of her all-time favourites. “Hold the glass to the light and it flashes with vivacious green and gold. Nose it and you’ll immediately think rose garden, while a core of racy acidity on the palate of lime and pineapple tempers its aromatics. For me the strongly aromatic character, slight spiciness, fruit, sugar and acidity are so well balanced and in such harmony. These are all the features that make it a natural partner with food.”
She suggests enjoying it with South African, Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines because its lovely off-dry floral notes stand up well to a bit of spice. “This is also the ultimate poultry wine, from chicken to duck and quail, but don’t forget about seafood either. It’s delicious with fish and shell-fish prepared with slightly tangy sauces. It is also a beauty with soft cheeses and fruit-based desserts.”
Grapes for this wine were sourced from a selection of vineyards in Paarl, Stellenbosch and Durbanville, some nearly 30 years’ old.
