The examination is open to all SASA members willing to validate their knowledge and expertise as sommeliers with a day of tests covering theory, blind tasting and practical dining room work. The purpose of the examination is to create an industry norm for sommeliers and to safeguard the sommelier profession against misuse of the title.
The judging will be done by certified sommeliers and the results will be revealed at the end of the day. The examination papers will not be available to the candidates after the examination, but verbal feedback will be provided to all that wish to receive it. The judges’ outcome are is final and will under no circumstances be subject to alteration.
It is recommended that the students have a minimum theoretical and practical level of understanding in line with WSET Level 2, the Cape Wine Academy Certificate Course and the Court of Master Sommeliers Introductory Sommelier Certificate. The candidate must pass all three sections (theory, blind tasting and practical) at once, the sections’ content will change from time to time. Upon successful completion of the examination the candidate will be awarded the title of SASA Sommelier.
