The pop-up bar was inspired by the Spier
Secret Festival held annually over two days at Spier in the Stellenbosch
Winelands. Like the festival, the bar wove together culture, sustainability,
heritage and great food and wine – ensuring these facets could be enjoyed by
urban drinkers over the course of several weeks.
The
Cape Town edition of the Spier Secret Courtyard opened its doors at 64A Wale
Street in the city’s centre in February 2014, closed at the end of April that
year. The Joburg edition was based in Braamfontein’s buzzing Juta Street over
the course of November 2014.
Word
soon spread about both locations, and the three nights a week (Thursday, Friday
and Saturday) that the bar was open, it was bustling with patrons enjoying Spier
wine and snacks. Secret Dinners were hosted by leading Cape and Joburg
creatives, while on Friday nights there were relaxed live music sessions.
