To support his argument, four Academy
representatives spoke as part of a new generation of well-qualified young
people entering the industry. Two
graduates, Dillon Uren now working at Antonij Rupert and Phelisa Moni from
Spice Route, plus two current students, Nolubabalo
Mashiya and Oscar
Ponoane, shared their stories and
experiences. These four, along with
their fellow students, will bring their skills and qualities to benefit the
sector, as well as playing an important role in achieving the desired transformation
of the industry.
The Stellenbosch-based Pinotage Youth
Development Academy runs a 12-month programme for disadvantaged 18-25 year old
South Africans. Its innovative approach follows the pattern of the workplace
with clear policies and procedures in place. Learning combines technical theory
with practical placements across the entire value chain of wine, from vineyard
through to tasting room. Most
importantly, it focuses on personal development, giving its students the
confidence, knowledge and ability to ease the transition into the world of
work.
The Academy’s approach has delivered impressive
results. The first intake of 25 students
completed their studies in May 2014, with a 96% retention rate and all students
achieving a 75% pass mark or better. After three months of completing the programme, 21 of the 24 graduates
were in employment, applying their work ready skills and personal talents to
the benefit of their new employers.
Nikki Munro, Programme Director, strongly
believes that the Academy’s students will make a vital difference in the years to come. “Our Academy’s graduates have an
excellent understanding of the A-Z of wine from a technical point of view,
strongly embedded through their practical experience. Combine this with a highly developed degree
of self-awareness and self-confidence and they are already bringing the
requisite skills and right attitude that will guarantee a bright future for the
country’s wine
industry.”
