The 2014 South African Wine Tasting Championships will take place this Saturday, the 2nd of August 2014, in Cape Town.

In partnership with the largest South African wine internet web platform, wine.co.za, this competition, open to all wine lovers, is aiming at discovering talents, and helping to select Team South Africa. Participating and running a chance to become a South African champion is easy, and allows those with talent to compete alongside wine specialists.

On the day, all participants will taste 50 wines, presented by top South African wineries: Creation, Beau Belle, Steenberg, Lutzville, Spice Route, Marianne, Edgebaston and Jordan. Once they have tasted and analyzed these wines they will enter the blind tasting arena and will have to recognize 10 wines blind, of which at least 8 come from the selection they have just tasted. So memory of smells and remembering the tastes are the keys to becoming a National Champion! Out of the Top 10 National champions, the best will be selected to be Team South Africa, flying to France for the World Championship in Champagne on the 18th of October 2014.

2013 saw Team South Africa participating in the World Championship for the first time. Team South Africa’s 2013 participation at this global event, with Chantelle Swanepoel, Khuselo Mputa, Roland Peens, Anton Swarts and Gavin Whittaker, was a human adventure turned into a documentary film, Wine Champions, to be released later in the year.

Let’s wish this years contestants the best in bringing the World Cup to South Africa, and in proving to the world that South Africa is a great wine nation. In 2013 Belgium became World Champion, unseating Denmark, the 2012 World Champions.

The South African Wine Tasting Championship is open to all over the age of 18, and will be held at the Hilton, Cape Town City Center, from 10:30 until 18:00 on the Saturday 2nd of August 2014. Doors will close at 16:30 to give ample time for the contestants to assess the wines, and put their taste to the test. Tickets for sale R250 per participant on www.sawtc.co.za.
