The
SAWi Wine Awards was once again a showcase of the best of the best South
African ‘classic wines’ – yet again highlighting the value of the SAWi
principles and methodology. The SAWi wine judging methodology is based on the
combined results a wine has achieved over a number of years, in any of 54
different multi-national wine competitions, with the quality adjudication taken
over multi-vintages. Consistency in results, Top 10 mentions and trophies are
also taken into account during these calculations.
SAWi
Platinum is the highest accolade that may be achieved by any wine. A score of
95+, out of a possible 100, will secure this award. This is followed by Grand
Gold at 93 to 94 and Gold at 90 to 92 points.
No
score below this attracts any accolades, ensuring that SAWi decorations are
aspirational and really the cream of the crop.
Since
the start of the SAWi Ratings four years ago, only 32 wines, including the De
Krans Cape Tawny Port, have scored 95+ points.
In
November the 2011 De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port was selected as a 5 star
wine in the 2014 Platter’s Wine Guide, already the ninth consecutive year that
a port from De Krans has achieved this. In the same guide, De Krans Cape Tawny
Port and 2012 Cape Vintage Port both received a 4½ star rating.
