The Swellendam Municipality published a new liquor trading hours bylaw.
It commenced on the 15th of November 2013.

In terms of the bylaw restaurants and hotels may sell liquor from 10h00 to 01h00 Monday to Sunday.

Guesthouses may sell from 10h00 to 24h00 Monday to Sunday.

Sport bars, sport clubs and taverns may sell from 10h00 to 01h00 Monday to Saturday and from 10h00 to 17h00 on Sunday.

Other on-consumption licenced premises such as function venues may sell from 10h00 to 01h00 Monday to Sunday.

Business described as “off sales” and “grocery stores” may sell from 09h00 to 20h00 Monday to Saturday and from 10h00 to 14h00 on Sunday.

Other business with off-consumption licences may sell from 09h00 to 20h00 Monday to Saturday and from 10h00 to 17h00 on Sunday.

According to Danie Cronje, the Director of Liquor Law Services at Cluver Markotter Incorporated it is uncertain what businesses will be considered “off sales” as the term is not defined in the bylaw.

The bylaw does make provision for a licencee to apply to sell liquor between other hours than those determined by the bylaw.
