Boplaas Family
Vineyards definitely have their heads in the clouds this week, with the news
that the Boplaas Cape Tawny Show Reserve
N/V was not only chosen to be served onboard SAA Premium Class in 2014, but also took top honours and flew away with the SAA Port of the Year Trophy. The SAA
Wine Awards celebrated its 29th year and just over 1000 wines
were assessed “blind” by an expert panel including overseas judges to decide
which wines will be served on the national carrier for the coming year.
The art of
crafting a fine Cape Tawny “Port’ at Boplaas is one of patience, dedication and
expert blending of barrel matured wines some spending more than a decade in
barrel prior to blending. The Boplaas Cape Tawny Show Reserve N/V is
crafted from traditional Portuguese varietals, vinified according to
traditional methods in lagar, aged in
a selection of old barrels – including Port
Pipes, and blended to create a complex red-brown Tawny coloured wine
brimming with toasted almond, pecan caramel, walnut, toffee, bright wood spice
and wisps of Demerara sugar, All-spice and macerated black plum.
An ideal after
dinner accompaniment to mature cheeses, dried fruits and dark chocolate, this
fine Cape Tawny also pairs perfectly with roast duck, slow roasted pork belly,
mild Cape Malay dishes and Cantonese dishes.
Contrary to popular belief, the Boplaas Cape Tawny Show Reserve N/V
should be enjoyed lightly chilled especially in warmer climes or summertime.
For those not
enjoying the very best SAA has to offer, the stellar range of Boplaas Cape
Tawny “Ports” are available from the
Boplaas cellar door in Calitzdorp and the Cool Bay tasting room in Great Brak
near Mossel Bay. The Tawny range
includes, the all conquering Boplaas Cape
Tawny Vintners Reserve N/V (375m?) – Veritas double gold 2013, Michelangelo Gran d’Or 2013, CAPPA “Best in Show” 2013. As well as the Boplaas Cape Tawny N/V and finally a collection of Colheitas or vintage Cape Tawny’s from the 1994, 1995 and 1997 vintages. These single vintage Boplaas Cape Tawnies spent 18, 17 and 12 years respectively in barrel prior to bottling.
