Hilda’s Kitchen at Groote Post Vineyards, well worth the drive

With the pleasant drive along the R27 and then turning right onto the Darling Hills Road to Groote Post one immediately gets into holiday mode.
After 10 km on the gravel road, turn right to the Groote Post cellar. Savour the beautiful farm vistas and when you stop at the Groote Post restaurant, known as Hilda’s Kitchen, take a stroll around the farm yard and the cellar to work up an appetite.

Eat Out 2013 has nominated Debbie Mc Laughlin’s country fare establishment as both Best Bistro and Best Country Style in the region - the only restaurant in South Africa with this double accolade. The restaurant is in a gorgeous old historic farmhouse. With all dishes complementing the outstanding Groote Post wine range, the starter menu includes warm caramelised pear and blue cheese salad and the excellent tomato, basil and camembert tart.

Although the menu changes regularly, the old man’s steak roll with garlic crème and handcut chips or the succulent slow roast pork belly with plum sauce and noodles are firm favourites – and many patrons come back and back again to savour these specialities.
