Held under the auspices of the Sauvignon
Blanc Interest Group of South Africa (SBIG) with sponsorship provided by FNB,
this year attracted a record number of 207 entries (compared to 195 in 2012). The
competition was started in 2007 to promote innovation and excellence in the
category, and reward those endeavouring to make wines of true
distinction.
The Cape of Good
Hope range comprises terroir-specific
wines created in recognition of South Africa’s 350-year-old vinous heritage.
The first vintage was launched in 2011, the result of the Old Vines Initiative.
This initiative was launched seven years ago by Johann Rupert who took on the
wine mantle of the Rupert family following the untimely death of his brother,
and renowned winemaker Anthonij, in 2001.
The Altima vineyard is situated in
a pristine valley north of Villiersdorp and is surrounded by a steep mountain
range that rises 1km from the valley floor. During the winter months these
mountains are typically covered with snow and, coupled with the elevation of
600 to700m, equates to a very cool climate. This unique terroir produces wines
with a high natural acidity and upfront aromas. The vineyards produce an
intense Sauvignon Blanc with a fresh expression of passion fruit, citrus and
tropical flavours.
Winemaker Dawie Botha describes
this wine as displaying appealing tropical fig and pear aromas with granadilla
and lemon zest, adding brightness and vivacity, with exquisite ripe tropical
flavours in the mouth. The fig, gooseberry, granadilla and lemon zest come
though beautifully. A vibrant and lively wine with well integrated acidity. The
palate is textured and round with good mouthfeel, allowing the wine to finish
on a light, dry flinty note.
