Boplaas Family Vineyards
Boplaas Family Vineyards makes its 23rd appearance at the 39th Nederburg Auction with the stellar Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2005, as well as offering a special selection of the finest Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Ports for the charity auction.

In the sleepy Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp, the Nel’s of Boplaas have tended vines & crafted vines since 1880 and have since built a reputation for crafting fine wines and Cape fortifieds. This family vineyard with father and daughter team of Carel & Margaux Nel at the helm, respectively the 7th and 8th generation winemaker, attempt to craft wine according to traditional methods from a selection of vineyards ranging from the West Coast to the Upper Langkloof & their 70 hectares in Calitzdorp.

The Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2005 was crafted in lagars, traditional open fermenters, according to traditional methods from a trio of Portuguese varietals – a portion of which originated from old ungrafted vines planted by Boplaas patriarch Oupa Danie Nel. This exceptional wine was crowned the SA Champion Port at the SA Young Wine Show 2005; while scooping a double gold at Veritas and receiving 5 Stars from the Platter’s South African Wine Guide in 2008. This pitch black wine with purple rim, unfurls with layers of macerated hedge row fruit, plum, fynbos, five spice, an exceptionally long lingering dry finish & firm tannins ensuring decades of cellaring potential. A total of 10 x 6 cases will be offered on auction, with a total of 4800 bottles of this wine crafted in total.

Boplaas’s cellar master & owner Carel Nel has also donated a bottle each of his Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2005, 2006, 2008 & 2009 for the Charity Auction. These fine Cape fortifieds were crafted according to traditional methods utilizing Portuguese varietals - a portion of which are from ungrafted vines; were all rated 5 Stars from Platters’ & Carel is quietly confident that these fine fortifieds will offer enjoyment over the next 50 years or more. All proceeds of the Charity Auction will be donated to the Goedgedacht Trust, the Pebbles Project Trust & the Anna Foundation.

The 39th Nederburg Auction takes place on the Friday the 6th and Saturday the 7th of September at the historic Nederburg winery in Paarl, with the Boplaas lots coming under the gavel early on Friday morning.
