WINE: Crucial time for prestige wine event

The 2013 Nederburg Auction is destined to be something of a make-or-break moment for South Africa's longest-running prestige wine event. The past few years have seen it lose ground to the Cape Winemakers Guild Auction - perceived by many to offer rarer and therefore more desirable wines.
There has been some truth to this impression: Nederburg's line-up has not always included the kind of thoroughbreds appropriate for the event’s pretensions, and lately the donkeys and mules have been substantially in evidence. (It should be added that the guild has hawked more than a few drays and carthorses in its time - but they are sold as yearlings so it takes the buyers a lot longer to find out they should have been more prudent with their money.)

However, this is less about the contents of the bottle than the gratification the punter feels when he takes his booty home.
