Escape the daily humdrum of life in the fast lane for an enchanting food and wine experience in a time-honoured cellar under the ground and make your way to the Bottelary Hills Wine Route on the outskirts of Stellenbosch when Hartenberg Estate plays host to the route’s seasonal ‘Pop Up’ Winemakers Lunch on Sunday, 25 August.

Celebrating winter with a warm cosy setting in the underground maturation cellar guests can look forward to an exciting bistro style four- course feast where a selection of finest wines from this award-winning winegrowing area is paired with the fabulous food.

“Our Bottelary Hills Winemaker Lunches are extremely popular due to their jovial yet intimate nature. It is then when the local winemakers trade in their cellar tricks and wine politics for a laidback lunch with like minded wine and food lovers. It is the perfect end to your weekend and just the right fix if you suffer from Urban Horriblis!” shares Annareth Bolton, CEO of the Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes.

Shiraz specialist Hartenberg and fellow estates jotted along the route have pulled out all the stops in matching their prized cellar gems with the day’s bill of fare which promises a sensory overload. Resident chef Maia du Plessis relishes devising meals to complement the exquisite wines of the region and enticing taste sensations on the day ranges from 12-Pigs’ home cured bresaola and dill-delicious salmon trout to a succulent fillet of beef and dreamy Creme Catalan.

Nestled north-west of Stellenbosch, the Bottelary Hills Wine Route – a sub-route of the Stellenbosch American Express Wine Routes – reveals an untapped world of quality wine to both discerning wine drinkers and those who appreciate Cape heritage. Steeped in history, this ‘hidden’ wine route is home to some of the oldest wine farms in the country including Beyerskloof, Bellevue, Goede Hoop, Groenland, Hartenberg, Kaapzicht, Mooiplaas, Stellenrust and Villiera.

The great charm of this wine route comes from the fact that most of the farms have been family-owned for many generations. This rich sense of history, commitment and family radiates in both the wines and the welcoming atmosphere of this area.

The Bottelary Hills Winemakers Lunch at Hartenberg, an unadulterated experience of true Winelands camaraderie, costs R250 per person which includes a four course meal and the wines on the day. To book your seats contact Tel: (021) 886 8275 or send an email to marketing@wineroute.co.za. Pre-bookings are essential as seating is limited.

Hartenberg Estate is situated on the M23 Bottelary Road off the R304 to Stellenbosch.
