Chenin specialist Bruwer Raats has once again hit the spot with his 2012 Granite Blocks Chenin Blanc being included in Jancis Robinson’s Purple Pages. The legendary Robinson has been a wine writer for over three decades and is currently the wine columnist for the prestigious Financial Times.
In her search for the best buys under £10, Robinson chose the Granite Blocks Chenin as a great value wine. Robinson reckons that South Africa is a vertile hunting ground for “value” whites due to the extensive plantings of Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc and the fact that South Africans have undervalued local whites for a long time. Loving the “great purity and freshness” of Raats’ latest offering, Robinson mentions that it “tastes like a wine made from the earth rather than for the market” and highlights its “solid grip on the mid palate and clean finish.”

Raats produces the Granite Blocks specifically for Majestic Wines in the United Kingdom and is excited about the inclusion of his wine on this illustrious list. “It is great to have someone with a fantastic palate like Jancis noticing my wines. I really appreciate that somebody recognises my winemaking philosophy that the wine should reflect the soils that the grapes are grown on. That is exactly why we called the wine Granite Blocks Chenin Blanc as all the grapes were grown on decomposed granite. Quality and consistency at good value will always be a winning recipe,” states Raats.
