Young Guns 3 - The future of SA winemaking

Tuesday, 4 June, 2013

This June and July, Wine Cellar will once again be hosting the country’s most exciting and irreverent annual wine event – Young Guns. Now in its third year, Young Guns introduces winemakers who are pushing the boundaries, flouting convention and embracing ‘natural’ winemaking.
Whilst all of the participating winemakers work for notable estates, they are also producing unique, interesting and sometimes wacky wines under their own labels. Young Guns lll will be held on the 12th of June at The River Club in Observatory, Cape Town and on the 4th of July at the University of Johannesburg. Forget stuffy tastings – there will be music, there will be wine and there will be many a bearded Swartlander.

Expect this year’s tastings to be bigger and better than ever before. The line-up will be a mix of new and old faces, including husband-and-wife team Chris and Susan Alheit of Alheit Vineyards. After wowing the audience at Young Guns 2012, they went on to achieve international acclaim and to receive five stars in Platter – South Africa’s veritable wine bible. They’ll present their wines alongside seven other talented renegades.

Winemakers:

·  Chris Alheit – Alheit Vineyards (own label)
·  Peter Finlayson – Crystallum (own label)
·  Craig Hawkins – Lammershoek and Testalonga (own label)
·  Jurgen Gouws – Lammershoek and Intellego Wines (own label)
·  David Sadie – Lemberg and Sadie Wines (own label)
·  Marelise van Rensburg – Beaumont and Elementa (own label)
·  Donovan Rall – Vuurberg and Rall Wines (own label)
·  Johan Meyer - Mount Abora and Johan Meyer Wines (own label)

As with last year, the winemakers will pair their wines with music and will go on to explain why and how they do what they love. (Watch a video on Young Guns 2012 here.) Join Wine Cellar in Cape Town or Jozi for an evening of music, fun and phenomenal wines. Tickets will include a hearty meal of soup and bread.
