Lonely Hearts of Harvest

There is an unmentioned rule in the winelands. Don’t hassle a winemaker during harvest, even if it falls around Valentine's Day. In fact, don’t look at one; don’t even breathe near one lest you wish to end your days in a stainless steel cask.

It’s a tense time.

But what about the untold heroes, the silent partners of the Harvest? Wine.co.za meet up with the faces that February forgot. Get your tissues ready, it’s going to get emotional.

Our first Lonely Heart video features Carla van der Merwe, ex Wine.co.za news editor and girlfriend of Francois Joubert, chief winemaker at Asara.

She describes only too poignantly the loneliness of Harvest time and the long hours apart. But it's not all doom and gloom, with plenty of 'me' time, comes the honing of sewing and crafting skills. Soon Carla will be able to sew enough scatter cushions to fill up that empty spot on the couch.

If you are a lonely heart in the winelands - please send your stories to editor@wine.co.za or submit via our SUBMIT button with images and/or video links and we can have some fun sharing the loneliness!
