Boschendal Wines has been awarded two Five Star ratings from the 2013 John Platter Wine Guide. The Cecil John Reserve Shiraz 2010 and the Boschendal Reserve Chardonnay 2011 were both accorded this honour when the 34th edition of the John Platter Wine Guide was revealed at the Vineyard Hotel and Spa Conference Centre in Newlands Cape Town on Tuesday 30th October 2012.
JC Bekker, Group Winemaker for Boschendal’s parent company DGB, was visibly pleased and said “The fact that these two wines have won awards is especially pleasing since they represent the style of wine making that Boschendal has become so well known for; elegance and the slightest hint of opulence.”

The Boschendal Reserve Chardonnay 2011 was harvested from a single vineyard in the Faure area near Somerset West. The wine was initially fermented in tank, and fermentation was completed in a combination of first, second and third fill barrels. Maturation in barrel continued for 11 months with regular batonage for the first 6 months. The wine has zesty orange flavours, superb balance and structure, exceptional length and a lingering minerality. Lizelle Gerber, Boschendal’s White Wine Winemaker thinks that the wine will improve with age: “It will become richer and more complex, with the many different dimensions of aged Chardonnay emerging over time, definitely a keeper!”

Wines from the niche Cecil John Reserve collection are only made when conditions in the vineyards are at their optimum. The Shiraz 2010 originates from the Stellenbosch region, on a farm granted organic status in 2011, but farmed as such for over 8 years. According to JC, “This wine is big in every sense of the word. It has a huge palate, rich, dark fruit flavours with seductive spice nuances, and a spectacular finish.” JC thinks that this wine will develop further in bottle and will remain in prime condition for at least eight to ten years.

Both wines are available from the Boschendal Estate Cellar Door, Pniel Road, R310, Groot Drakenstein or contact Cellardoor@dgb.co.za
