Boplaas Family VIneyards
The multi-award winning Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2004 shone at this past weekend’s 38th instalment of the prestigious Nederburg Auction.
After furious bidding the ten cases offered, were all auctioned off at an average of R3600 per case of 12. Crafted exclusively from Portuguese varietals and destined for extended cellaring.

Crafted exclusively from old vine Portuguese varietals, according to traditional Portuguese methods and in true Vintage style, the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2004 is a wine well-worth tracking down and it’ll be available to the public from the successful bidders who purchased the lots at the past weekend’s 38th Nederburg Auction.

This Cape fortified was hand-crafted by the Nel’s of Boplaas Family Vineyards - situated in the picturesque Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp - who have established a reputation for the crafting a range of fine wines, most notably those from Portuguese varietals. The 38th Nederburg Auction was Boplaas’ 22nd appearance at the auction and was one of only 158 wines picked by a panel of experts to be included.

The Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2004 was crafted from select parcels of ungrafted Tinta Barocca, Touriga Naçional and a portion of Souzão from old vines in excess of twenty years in age. Crafted in true drier Vintage style and exhibiting a perfect balance between fruit, tannins and alcohol to ensure a cellaring potential in excess of three decades. This year’s auctioneer Master of Wine, Anthony Barne, was impressed by the wines complexity and range of flavours in his tasting note in the auction catalogue and eluded to the excellent ageing potential with his observation “could do with a few more years to fine down”.

This wine was awarded 5 Stars in the Platters’ South African Wine guide; “Best Vintage Port” and “Best Port overall” CAPPA Challenge 2006; Winemaker’s Choice Diamond Award in 2008; Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show “Port Trophy” winner 2008 and received a gold medal at Veritas 2009.

Only 10 cases were auctioned and each sold at a price higher than their reserve, which was a most pleasing result especially considering the current economic climate. Consumers will now have the opportunity to purchase this exceptional wine from Checkers – who purchased 8 cases and were also this year’s largest buyer at the auction. A special selection of 10 Vintages of Boplaas Cape Ports were Auctioned for charity for R4000.

This weekend will also see the public auctioning off of the Carel Nel Cape Winemakers’ Guild Cape Vintage Reserve 2010 at the 30th CWG Auction on Saturday, the 6th of October, at Spier in Stellenbosch.
