Fleur Du Cap Theatre Awards – Nominations

The 2001 nominations for the prestigious annual Fleur Du Cap Theatre Awards, that have supported the arts in the Western Cape for the past thirty-five years by giving recognition to local professional theatre, have been announced in Cape Town by the Distell Foundation for the Performing Arts.

The awards will be presented at a luncheon at the Radisson Hotel in Cape Town on Friday, 8th March 2002 when silver and bronze medallions and cash prizes of R5 000 will be awarded to the winners.

Four actors have been nominated for the Best Actor Award: (in alphabetical order) Bill Flynn for his role as Willy in Death of a Salesman; Rajesh Gopie for playing various characters in Out of Bounds; Sello Sebotsane in the role of Idi Amin in Big Dada, and Marius Weyers for his role as the poet in Sorrows & Rejoicings.

The three nominations in the category Best Actress are: Claire Berlein for her portrayal of Mag Folan in The Beauty Queen of Leenane; Jana Cilliers in the title role of The American Popess, and Antoinette Kellermann as the old woman in Tango del Fuego.

The four nominees in the category Best Supporting Actor are: Frantz Dubrowsky as Charley and Langley Kirkwood as Biff, both in Death of a Salesman; Donal Slemon as Pato Dooley and Rob van Vuuren as Ray Dooley, both in The Beauty Queen of Leenane.

Paddy Canavan as the mother in The Beauty Queen of Leenane; Imrain Ismail-Essop as Rebecca in Sorrows and Rejoicings, and Michele Maxwell in the role of Linda in Death of a Salesman have been nominated in the category Best Supporting Actress.

The nominations for Best Director are: Marthinus Basson for Tango del Fuego; Bobby Heany for Death of a Salesman, and Janice Honeyman for The Beauty Queen of Leenane.

Four young actors have been nominated for Most Promising Student. They are: Mark Elderkin, Mbulelo Grootboom, Deon van Zyl and Evelyn Ball.

In the category Best Performance in a Musical or Revue there were four nominations: Jody Abrahams for his role as Hendrik Skilpad in Die Ballade van Koos Sas; Mark Hoeben for his role as the dance master in Tango del Fuego; Warren Kimmel for various characters in Cats, and Tina Schouw for her performance in Defrocked – Not the Midnight Mass.

The four nominees for the category Best Contribution to a Musical or Revue are: David Kramer for Karoo Kitaar Blues; Janine Neethling for Vere; Deon Opperman for the same production, and Heinrich Reisenhofer for Defrocked – Not the Midnight Mass.

In the category Best Technical Contribution there were three nominations: Keith Anderson for Stage Management for Cats; Marthinus Basson for décor & set design for Tango del Fuego, and Stan Knight also for décor & set design for Death of a Salesman.
