Weltevrede Wine Estate
Just outside Bonnievale, in the picturesque Robertson Wine Valley, lies the historical Weltevrede, the Jonker family wine estate whose rich heritage spans a noteworthy four generations.
Ensuring the perpetuity of family legacy is a credo by which the Jonker family lives and a mantle Philip Jonker humbly assumes as current owner: "I grew up among the vines of Weltevrede. I played in the soil as a boy and so did my father, grandfather and great grandfather before me," says Philip. The roots which anchor this legacy date back to 1926 when founder and patriarch, Klaas Jonker, planted 'Oupa's Vineyard'.

It is from these ancient, knobbly bush-vines of Oupa's Vineyard, which still yield a crop each year despite their antique fragility, that Oupa se Wyn - the full-sweet blend of Red Muscadel and Muscat de Hambourg - hails. Philip Jonker makes Oupa se Wyn (named after his great-grandfather, Klaas Jonker) - and its counterpart, Ouma se Wyn, (named after Philip's grandmother, Elizabeth Johanna Jonker) - using exactly the same traditional method as his father, his grandfather and his great-grandfather.

The grapes from Oupa's Vineyard, along with those from other old vineyards, are used to make Oupa se Wyn; while Ouma se Wyn is made from a single Muscat de Frontignan vineyard, bordering Oupa's Vineyard. Oupa- and Ouma se Wyn appropriately comprise Weltevrede's 'Heritage range'. They are available at the farm, and at select outlets nationally, and retail at R55 each; or purchase a beautifully packaged duo gift for R135.
