Combining the green, grassy aromas of nettles, green peppers and fresh herbs, with an aftertaste of ripe, tropical fruit flavours, this new Sauvignon is an exciting release from this long-established wine farm that prides itself on producing only the best wines. As a highly-respected cellarmaster, Niel Bester is rightly proud of his latest creation: a well-flavoured Sauvignon blanc that was meticulously 'chosen' to result in a wine typical of the cultivar, and true to latest trends. The grapes were harvested from four separate vineyards, ranging in age from eight to 25 years situated on the south-eastern slopes of the Simonsberg. This prestigious 974 hectare farm has 400 hectares under prime vineyards and only 80 hectares have been exclusively identified for Plaisir de Merle's own wines. The final blend combined the riper, flavours obtained from the older vineyards on the lower slopes with younger grapes from higher altitudes, where cooler climatic conditions are ideal for producing the 'cool-climate character' that is the essence of today's best Sauvignon blanc wines. Not only were Bester's grapes well-sourced, this year he was also blessed with perfect weather conditions prior to harvesting. This year's mild summer provided perfect ripening conditions for his white grapes and this, combined with constant research, development, and commitment on the part of his viticulture team, has produced exciting results. However, on top of its fashionable 'green' image, this new ever-popular Sauvignon blanc now offers a greater ageing potential, and is promised still to be at its best for another two years, although it is great to drink now. The 2009 Sauvignon Blanc from Plaisir de Merle is now available at about R80 and will make a perfect accompaniment to summer salads, pastas, and seafood.
