As part of the historic agreement, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes will donate R250 000 to help SASA fulfill their mandate.

Long time supporters of the South African Sommeliers Association (SASA), Stellenbosch Wine Routes have graciously agreed to donate R250 000 in cash and kind, to help further the noble profession of sommelier in South Africa.

“We appreciate the critical role that sommeliers play in our industry. With our support we are excited that we will better enable SASA to certify and empower more professionals to greater heights, which in turn will have a positive impact on our industry,” says Elmarie Rabe, manager for the Stellenbosch Wine Routes.

SASA’s mandate is primarily to empower the professionals that dedicate themselves to the service of food and beverage, through certifications and competitions.

We currently have four levels of certification:

  • Introductory Sommelier
  • Junior Sommelier
  • SASA Sommelier
  • Association de la Sommellerie (ASI) diploma

In addition to this, we organise the best sommelier and best young sommelier competition in South Africa on alternate years.

“We are incredibly delighted to have SWR as a partner. SASA was founded and is operated by a group of volunteers with nothing more than passion and a good cause in their hearts. This historic partnership will go a long way towards us achieving our lofty ambitions.” Spencer Fondaumiere, chairperson of SASA.
