Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards
Danie de Wet is one of the legends who helped shape KWV, putting a lot of emphasis on South Africa’s Wine of Origin system.

In the March issue of Wineland magazine, Bernard Mocke wrote about legends in the wine industry who also helped shape KWV and who had an impact on the wine industry. One of them is Danie de Wet of Robertson, who put a lot of emphasis on South Africa’s Wine of Origin (WO) system which was initiated in 1972 and implemented in 1973.

Danie said thanks to a group of industry experts who contributed a vast amount of time and knowledge towards developing the WO, it’s truly one of the very best certifications systems in the world. They had work groups that travelled to several of the wine regions to see how their origins systems worked.

South Africa’s wine of origin system and variety of wine terrains that deliver exceptional quality wines has now been applauded for 12 years at the annual Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards.  Only wines certified as a Wine of Origin from a single vineyard, estate, ward or small district not divided into more than one ward can be entered. The volume requirement is only 180 litres (20 twelve-bottle cases).

“It is a privilege to be involved in this proudly South African Wine of Origin system with a competition that honours those wines that represent a specific wine terrain,” says Marius Labuschagne, founder of the SA Terroir Wine Awards.

“South Africa can lay claim to many prime wine terroirs for its wide variety of top cultivar wines. The most interesting and esteemed part of the SA Terroir Wine Awards is to see each year which terrain delivered South Africa’s best wines, regarding cultivar and/or style of wine.”

At the 13th annual Novare SA Terroir Wine Awards the judges will include Jolette Steyn, Karen Glanfield, Jeff Grier, Kris Snyman, Sandile Mkhwanazi and David Biggs.

The National Winners of the SA Terroir Wine Awards will be honoured with certificates at the awards function. The winners in the categorised areas will be announced in the official documentation, and certificates can be ordered. A self-adhesive decal (for bottle use) can be ordered for both the national winners and district/ward winners.

Novare Trophies for SA Terroir Top Single Vineyard Wine, SA Terroir Top Producer, SA Terroir Top Wine Estate and SA Terroir Top Wine Area, as well as the SA Terroir Top 5 Estate Wines, will be announced.

Among South Africa’s top terroir performers since the first competition in 2006 are Bon Courage, Groot Constantia, Jordan, Nuy, Kaapzicht, Cederberg, Neethlingshof, Doolhof, Anura, Bergsig, Wildekrans and Hermanuspietersfontein.

The sponsor, Novare Equity Partners, is a leading private equity company and the sub-advisor tasked with sourcing new development opportunities for the Novare Africa Property Funds. These are focused on retail and commercial property development in sub-Saharan Africa.
