La Motte
Hike through La Motte Wine Estate's vineyards and fynbos, and enjoy exceptional Franschhoek views and plenty of special moments.

The vineyards at the foothills of the La Motte mountainside invite guests to enjoy a feel-good exercise of note – a hike through the estate’s vineyards and fynbos, with exceptional Franschhoek Valley views and plenty of special moments.

One such moment is when you realise that the Fan Leaf Aloes that can be seen along the trail are GPS-marked because of their rarity. Another is when you walk past a leopard camera that has caught leopard activity in the mountain on a few occasions. There is the splendour of silence when you are out of the hustle and bustle of the valley below.

And then there is the delicious moment of joy when you sip on a well-deserved glass of La Motte Vin de Joie Rosé in the charming lapa with its breathtaking views. This delicate pink is inspired by the joy of the beautiful Blushing Bride (Serruria florida) fynbos species that blooms for only a short but spectacular season.

The Sustainable Hike can be done on your own or with a guide. It’s a further expression of La Motte’s commitment to conservation, biodiversity, and the protection of precious indigenous flora and fauna in the estate’s mountain area and the adjoining Wemmershoek mountain range. The hike offers the ideal opportunity to explore abundant birdlife, a protea garden, sustainably farmed vineyards, a wealth of flora, and resident mammals and reptiles.

The circular route starts at the La Motte Tasting Room and is five kilometres long, with about two kilometres of hiking trail. It usually takes two to three hours to complete.

If you choose a guided hike, a knowledgeable and passionate guide will share more about the Franschhoek Valley and La Motte’s activities, including its plants, animals, and sustainable farming practices. Guides are always happy to answer any questions you may have. You’ll also receive a trail map, a bottle of water, and light refreshments after the hike.

The trail requires a moderate level of fitness and is not suitable for children under 10.

Before or after your hike, visit the La Motte Artisanal Bakery and Garden Café for treats fresh from the wood-fired oven and a seasonal menu. Wine tastings are also available at the Tasting Room.

Fresh air, fynbos beauty, fabulous sipping and some fitness thrown in too. That is truly wine for good!
