Dr Marais didn't just show up to meetings; he listened deeply, asked the hard and necessary questions. He served as a mentor to many within our organization as well as the broader industry. Dr Marais gave his time and energy without hesitation because he truly believed in the objectives of the various schemes and their importance for the South African wine industry.
We also include tributes from our Technical Committee and IPW Committee members who worked very closely with Dr Marais:
From our Technical Committee members
Pierre was not just someone we worked with – he was part of the fabric of our daily lives. A steady presence in meetings, a voice of reason under pressure, and often a source of warmth in quiet moments. Pierre brought integrity, reliability and humour to the workplace. He didn’t seek credit but always delivered. Whether offering help before being asked or checking in, after a tough day, he went beyond what was expected. We honour his memory not only in words but with the respect he earned. Pierre leaves behind a legacy of kindness, teamwork and quiet leadership. We will miss Pierre not just as a colleague, but as a friend.
From our IPW Committee members
It is with deep sadness that the IPW Committee remembers Dr. Pierre Marais, who was a longstanding and valued member of the IPW Committee since its inception in 1998.
Dr. Pierre will be remembered for his valuable input in helping to draft the first IPW guidelines, as well as for his extensive technical knowledge and expertise as an IPW auditor. He made many meaningful contributions to the IPW Committee over the years, and his expertise and willingness to share his knowledge were greatly appreciated by all members of the Committee.
The Wine Certification Authority, its committees, and personnel extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Dr Marais's wife, Noline Marais, and the rest of the Marais family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
