The stark impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imported wines is evident from analysis of US customs data by the Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organisation (OIVE).
In the first half of this year both the volume and value of wines imported to America fell sharply, largely due to Trump’s penalty tariffs but also in part due to the general trend away from wine among US consumers.
Trump’s 15% tariffs on products from the European Union took effect last August and remained in place for the full half year until the end of June.
In the latest six months the United States imported 536.8 million litres of wine worth €2.43 billion, a 16.8% slide in volume and a whopping 25.2% slump in value compared with the first six months of 2025, and spending fell by €816.4 million.
