It would seem that every unique wine experience has already been done, until now. Most wine lovers experience a blend only after all the important decisions have been made. This leaves a great, mysterious and profound opportunity for discerning wine lovers to discover the anatomy of a great wine, especially when it is a terroir-showcasing wine.
Zwartwater is about to turn that opportunity into an experience.
On Saturday, 26 September 2026, the new Paardeberg producer will launch Anatomy of a Vintage, a masterclass series that invites guests into one of the most consequential and rarely seen stages of winemaking: the interpretation of origin and the vintage through all the single-vineyard components, all the way to the final (unreleased) blend.
The inaugural edition, Issue 1.1 – ERB2026, will focus on Zwartwater's unreleased 2026 Estate Red Blend. For one afternoon, just 24 guests will taste the individual wines from all the different vineyard blocks and varieties on Lammershoek (widely known as the most historic vineyard property in the Swartland wine region) that were harvested for the final composition.

Hosted by Zwartwater's head winemaker, Stefan Johannes, guests will explore how differences in the Paardebergs ancient weathered granite soils, vineyard aspect, vine age and microclimate leave distinct, nuanced fingerprints on each wine, and how those expressions can ultimately be brought together in one definitive interpretation of origin and vintage.
It is not a blending workshop in which guests attempt to make their own wine. Nor is it a conventional retrospective tasting of a finished release. Instead, it offers something far less common: the opportunity to taste the individual components, identify the finer, nuanced complexities of each element, follow the winemaker's identification points and decisions, and finally experience the entire vintage deconstructed and blended, before it is released in 2028. That is what makes the concept particularly exciting for the wider wine community. It is an origin interpretation masterclass that will give you insight into what it takes to make a single ambassador-status wine that showcases site over variety.
The experience also captures a fleeting moment in the life of a vintage. These component wines exist independently only at this stage. Once the final blend is assembled, they disappear into it and cannot be tasted in the same form again. The 24 people in the room will therefore be the only guests ever to experience the 2026 Estate Red Blend quite like this.
The inaugural masterclass will also be moderated by a surprise (and legendary) fellow winemaker with a close understanding of Lammershoek and Swartland terroir, adding another perspective to the central question of the afternoon: how does a winemaker translate a complex site and a particular growing season into one wine that showcases both at its highest potential?
With Anatomy of a Vintage, Zwartwater is opening a part of the winemaking process that usually remains behind cellar doors. It is intimate by design, unrepeatable by nature and serious in its intent, but its appeal is simple: for anyone fascinated by how fine wine comes into being, this is an opportunity to experience the answer taking shape.
