Inside the cellar with winemaker Charles Lourens: Why every Z Collection Syrah starts as an experiment
For our winemaking team, the Z Collection Syrah is something of a playground.
Each vintage begins as a collection of separate Syrah batches, each made using different winemaking techniques and maturation vessels. Rather than blending every batch, our winemaking team evaluates each component individually, allowing the team to explore the many expressions this remarkable variety can offer.
As the wines develop, only the most exceptional components are selected for the final blend. Rather than combining every batch, the focus is always on showcasing the very best of the vintage. The result is a wine that captures everything we look for in a Z Collection Syrah. Signature aromas of floral perfume and spice, complemented by a refined, elegant and beautifully structured palate. Qualities that become even more apparent when enjoyed alongside the comforting flavours of winter.

Few grape varieties offer as much versatility as Syrah. At Zevenwacht, it has become one of our most exciting tools for exploration, allowing us to craft a collection of wines that share the same foundation while expressing entirely different personalities.
The Z Collection Syrah represents our pursuit of refinement and complexity. The Estate Syrah captures the variety’s classic. The approachable 7EVENS Shiraz Grenache offers a more relaxed and fruit-forward style, while the Rhône-inspired Tin Mine Red showcases Syrah's role within a thoughtfully crafted blend. The JAN Red Blend adds yet another perspective, demonstrating how this remarkable variety can evolve in unexpected ways. Together, they tell a story of place, craftsmanship and possibility.
