The Groote Post Angus Smash Burger features beef from the estate’s own Angus herd, house-made condiments, freshly baked brioche, and hand-cut chips fried in Angus tallow. This exclusive new dish is rooted in the estate’s commitment to provenance, quality, and sustainability.
The burger is a family effort in the truest sense. Dad, Nick Pentz, focused on adding value to the farm’s agricultural produce and growing the estate’s agritourism offering. His eldest son, Peter, the estate’s Communications Manager, shaped the concept and guest experience, while his brother Josh manages the Angus herd, ensuring the quality of the beef at the heart of the dish. Acclaimed local food personality Onnia Grobler joined the team to help develop the recipe and flavour profile.
On the plate, the burger delivers two Angus smash patties, mature cheddar, house-made garlic mayo, homemade pickles, and onions on a freshly baked brioche bun. It is served alongside hand-cut chips, triple-fried in Angus tallow.
“Consumers want to know where their food comes from,” says Peter Pentz. “They want authenticity, sustainability, and a genuine connection to the people producing it. But at the end of the day, we also just wanted to create an exceptional, honest dish that complements our Tasting Room experience, but more importantly, a burger we love. Everything starts with quality ingredients and honest farming.”
The launch strengthens Groote Post’s position as a leading agritourism destination on the West Coast, where visitors can experience firsthand the connection between farming, food, and wine.
The Groote Post Angus Smash Burger is available Wednesday to Sunday at the estate’s Tasting Room at R159, served complete with triple-fried chips. Cheese boards and charcuterie platters remain available throughout the week.
