Klawer Wine Cellars
Klawer Wine Cellars reflects on the month of May, which saw unprecedented flooding and plenty happening behind the scenes.

Olifants River bursts its banks

13 May 2026 was certainly a day to remember. Even though the Olifants River Valley is known as a floodplain, we had never seen the river rise above the Vredendal Bridge.

Rails, lamp poles, and all were washed down the river. The town could not be entered or exited. The rivers roared, and the roads fell silent. Many had to evacuate their homes and businesses. Towns were cut off from one another, and people could not get to and from work. Bridges were severely damaged and partially washed away, placing immense pressure on municipalities. Some people were left homeless, and livestock and vineyards also suffered.

Rescue teams and community members rushed to help people evacuate their homes and businesses. We are thankful that our employees are safe and that our premises remain in good standing.

Behind the scenes

Winemaking, photoshoots, conventions, and events – the last couple of weeks have been jam-packed for our team.

World Travel Market 2026

As part of the Weskus Tourism group, Klawer Wine Cellars hosted a lively wine tasting, shared some of our popular dessert wines, connected with several tourism entities, and explored new opportunities. Wine tourism has become an integral part of South African tourism, and we are excited to be part of it.

Clanwilliam Expo

Known as the agriculture expo, Clanwilliam once again showed resilience. Despite foot-and-mouth disease, heavy rains, and cold weather, the people of Clanwilliam came out to support and participate. The Klawer team set up a cozy wine stall with a wide selection of red and white wines, and, of course, a cold-weather favourite: African Vermouth. Our stall engaged guests with a fun competition where participants tried to pick up as many wine corks as possible with two hands to win a bottle of wine.

Stof and Pars Wine Walk

Ever heard of a wine walk? Stof and Pars is just that. Walkers had the opportunity to do a 5 km walk, hopping from one wine stall to the next. You could say it was a tasting in tekkies. It was a fun-filled day and an amazing opportunity to celebrate our wine with regulars and wine lovers from all over.

Wine of the month: Klawer Cape Vintage 2022

After the Olifants River Valley experienced its highest flood in a century, we chose Klawer Cape Vintage 2022 as our wine of the month. Just as the Cape always finds its way back to tradition, this wine reflects resilience and a return to timeless roots.

This dessert wine, made from 100% Souzão grapes, has hints of cherry and cinnamon with plenty of smoky black fruit on the palate.

Wine tip: Use dessert wine within 21 days of opening.
