An adventure of Chardonnay
Two wines. One landscape. Endless expression.
There are few varieties as quietly expressive as Chardonnay. It does not arrive loudly; it reveals itself. In the right hands, and in the right place, it becomes a lens – reflecting not only a winemaker’s intent, but the land from which it comes.
At Avontuur Estate, that place is the Helderberg.
Here, the slopes emerge out of ancient soils shaped by granite, shale, and time itself. The vineyards look toward False Bay, breathing in the cooling ocean air that tempers the warmth of the day. This interplay – sun and sea air, structure and freshness – is what allows Chardonnay to find its balance. Ripeness without excess. Brightness without austerity. Wines that hold both tension and grace.
Chardonnay thrives in conditions that demand precision. It is a variety that responds to nuance – to small decisions in the vineyard, to timing, to restraint in the cellar. It can carry oak, but should never hide behind it. It can show richness, but only when supported by natural acidity. In this way, it is both generous and exacting – a variety that rewards patience.
At Avontuur, this philosophy is expressed through two distinct interpretations.
The Disa Gorge Chardonnay
Named for the dramatic folds of the mountain above the estate, where the elusive Disa blooms, Disa Gorge Chardonnay speaks in finer detail. Shaped by elevation and cooling winds, it is a wine defined by clarity and poise.
Expect lifted citrus, subtle stone fruit, and a mineral line that runs quietly beneath it all. The oak is present but measured – framing rather than dominating. It is a wine that unfolds slowly, revealing its layers with time in the glass.
Winemaker Dominique Modena explains:
"With Disa Gorge, the intention is always to preserve that sense of brightness and place. It’s about allowing the vineyard to speak clearly, without overworking the wine.”

Luna De Miel Chardonnay
Where Disa Gorge is precise, Luna de Miel offers a softer, more generous expression. Its name – “honeymoon” in Spanish – hints at its character: romantic, rounded, and quietly indulgent.
There is a gentle richness here, balanced by freshness, with notes of ripe fruit, subtle oak, and a lingering finish. It is a wine made for ease, for long lunches, shared tables, and unhurried moments.
“Luna de Miel is about accessibility without compromise,” says Dominique.
“It still carries the hallmarks of Stellenbosch, but in a way that feels immediately welcoming.”

One variety, two journeys
Together, these wines tell a broader story of Chardonnay at Avontuur – not as a single expression, but as a spectrum. One shaped by precision and tension, the other by generosity and ease. Both grounded in the same landscape, yet interpreted through a different lens.
This is the quiet beauty of Chardonnay. It adapts, responds, and reflects ... never losing its identity, yet always revealing something new.
This Chardonnay Day, we invite you to explore both expressions.
Whether your preference leans towards refinement and minerality or richness and generosity, there is a Chardonnay for every palate and every occasion.
