This month, we had the pleasure of hosting our annual Blessing of the Crush, a moment to pause and celebrate the end of harvest and everything that went into this year’s vintage.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. It was great to share the day with you, from tasting early tank samples to experiencing the wines already beginning to show their character. The afternoon was made even more memorable with incredible food by Spoon Catering, who brought a fresh, flavourful menu to the day, and live music by Joshua America, which added a relaxed and easy atmosphere throughout.
This year’s harvest has been an exciting one, and a true reflection of the work happening behind the scenes. A special mention to our cellar team and Flagstone Head Winemaker Gerhard Swart, whose focus and dedication continue to shape what’s to come.
We’re also proud to share some recent recognition: In Winemag.co.za's Prescient Minority Report 2026, Tributary Chenin Blanc 2025 and The Bugler’s Call Grenache Noir 2024 both placed in the top 10. A great achievement for the team, and a reflection of the work going into these wines. Congratulations to Gerhard and the team behind it.

Meet the Kumala team
Kara Botha, bulk winemaker
I am involved in the strategic procurement, blending, and fining of wines to ensure stylistic consistency and quality in the final product. My focus is on bulk wine production, and I work collaboratively with winemaking teams to prepare, adjust, and dispatch wines in accordance with product specifications, production schedules, and market demand.
Juan Slabbert, winemaker and head wine buyer
Procurement and sourcing of bulk wines destined for Kumala, Fish Hoek, Echo Falls and other own label brands. Responsible for the blending and preparation of bulk wine shipments to the UK and rest of the world and also bottlings in South Africa.
Willene Roelofse, winemaking administrator
Manage stock on WineMS across the different cellars where we procure our wine and perform various winemaking administration for the bulk wine team.
Fadwa Gamieldien, quality assurance and winemaking administrator
Provide administrative support to the bulk wine team while assisting with quality assurance administration processes. I contribute to maintaining product standards, documentation, and compliance, and actively participate in the food safety team to ensure adherence to industry regulations and best practices.
