Rust en Vrede harvest reflection

Rust en Vrede
The 2026 harvest at Rust en Vrede was one that kept us on our toes.

With the pace of harvest behind us, we’ve had a moment to reflect on the season that was at Rust en Vrede Wine Estate.

A long, dry season with plenty of wind meant clean, healthy vineyards and the ability to stay in control. As our viticulturist Dirk Mouton put it, “this season kept us on our toes.” Early decisions in the vineyard, such as opening up canopies, managing yields, and responding quickly to pressure, set the tone for what followed.

March, however, reminded us of who’s really in charge. Three days above 40°C compressed the harvest into just over two weeks and demanded quick, decisive action. In the cellar, that intensity was clear. “One of our most compressed harvests,” as our winemaker, Danielle le Roux, described it – yet remarkably consistent.

A key takeaway from this vintage is the quality. Fruit arrived clean, evenly ripe, and showing deep colour and structure. The heat brought concentration, but with careful timing, we were still able to pick at balance.

There is great anticipation and confidence about what is to come. Yields are in line with our long-term average, and young blocks are starting to show real promise for the future.

It’s a vintage shaped by pressure, precision, and trust in the process. And one we’re genuinely excited about.
