Pebbles Project
As part of our #wineforgood month, we're sharing good news stories of Pebbles Project changing lives. Today we tell Charlene's story.

Pebbles Project is a non-profit organisation in Stellenbosch that enriches the lives of disadvantaged farm children and families through education. Operating throughout the Western Cape, they have changed the lives of many vulnerable people. One of these people is Charlene, a young financial assistant at Bellevue Wine Estate. Read her story:

Charlene grew up on Bellevue Wine Estate, Stellenbosch, where she attended the Pebbles Project After-School Club. The Pebbles Project School Enrichment Programme (SEP) Educational Outings and Activities Initiative offer learners valuable experiences outside the classroom, enhancing both their social and emotional development. One of Charlene’s favourite activities was performing on stage. She recalls, “We put together a musical production. I loved performing on stage with the other learners. I also really enjoyed our visit to the aquarium and going up Table Mountain.”

At age 16, Charlene knew she wanted to pursue a career in accounting. A Pebbles Project social worker supported her in obtaining a bursary to study Financial Management at Boland College.

Throughout her studies, the Pebbles Project social work team continued to provide valuable assistance and guidance, encouraging Charlene to persevere and complete her qualification. In 2017, Charlene graduated: “My parents are extremely proud of my achievement, and I hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams.”

One of the social workers at Pebbles Project assisted Charlene to secure an internship in financial management at Bellevue Wine Estate’s administration office. Charlene completed her internship and recently started working full-time at Bellevue as a financial assistant: “I love the people I work with, and I really enjoy what I do.”

Charlene recalls, “Pebbles means a lot to me. If I think back to when I was still in school, the computer literacy classes, for example, all contributed to what I know today and the person I am. I would encourage others, if they get the opportunity, to become involved with Pebbles because they have truly changed my life for the better.”

Charlene’s journey from a young learner at Pebbles Project to a successful financial assistant at Bellevue Wine Estate is a testament to her hard work and the unwavering support she received. Her story is a beautiful example of how Pebbles Project empowers individuals to reach their full potential, creating a lasting impact on both their personal and professional lives.
