A group of PYDA graduates had the opportunity to work at this year's Presidential Golf Challenge, an event in support of development initiatives across South Africa.

Fifteen alumni from the Pinotage Youth Development Academy (PYDA) had the opportunity to work at this year’s annual Presidential Golf Challenge held on 13 February 2026 at the Atlantic Beach Golf Estate in Melkbosstrand, about 30 km north of Cape Town. The event, hosted each year by President Cyril Ramaphosa following the State of the Nation Address, brings together leaders from government, business and civil society in support of development initiatives across South Africa.

For the PYDA graduates who participated, it was a memorable experience. The group had the opportunity to interact with President Cyril Ramaphosa, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, and Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille, alongside a range of political and business leaders and industry figures, including PYDA’s former Board Chairperson, Wandile Bereng, who was one of the golfers at the event. Their participation was facilitated by Denzel Swarts, PGDip (BussAdmin), Sales and Brand Executive at Zoetendal Vineyards and River Estate and a member of the PYDA Board.

Moments like this matter. For many young South Africans entering the world of work, access to professional networks and leadership spaces is limited. Being present in environments where national leaders and industry decision makers gather can be both inspiring and affirming. It allows young professionals to see themselves as part of South Africa’s economic and social future.

At PYDA, this kind of opportunity reflects the purpose of our work. Through the Vocational Pathways Programme, students complete a year of intensive personal development alongside industry focused training and work placements. The aim is not only to prepare young people for employment, but to develop confident and capable professionals who are ready to contribute meaningfully in demanding professional environments.

The relationship does not end at graduation. Through our Alumni Connected Programme, PYDA continues to support graduates as they build their careers and access opportunities that advance their personal and professional development. Experiences such as participation in the Presidential Golf Challenge form part of this work, creating spaces where graduates can continue to grow, expand their networks and strengthen their professional confidence. The group was coordinated and supported by Rita Rank, PYDA’s Alumni Connected Lead, who attended the event to guide and support the graduates throughout the experience.

In a country facing one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the world, it is easy to focus only on the scale of the challenge. Yet moments like this remind us of what becomes possible when young people are given the right support, training and opportunities.

The image of PYDA graduate (2015) Al-Jarreau “AJ” Jantjies standing alongside President Cyril Ramaphosa is more than a photograph. It reflects the journey from potential to professional success and serves as a reminder of the importance of creating pathways for young South Africans to thrive.
